How to choose a shirt or dress that fits your day

A useful choice starts with your plans and the shape you like to wear. Decide whether you need a collar, a loose silhouette or more room through the waist before you compare colors.

Start with the job of the piece

For work, a button-down can anchor trousers or a skirt. A satin finish reads dressier; a cotton-linen shirt feels more relaxed. For a day out, a shirt dress gives you the collar and button front in one piece.

Check fit where it matters

Compare the current size chart with a garment you already own. For shirts, look at bust and shoulders. For dresses, check bust, waist and total length. A letter size alone does not tell you how a particular cut will fall.
